Niki Jeliazkov: To achieve something meaningful, we must be able to beat anybody
Bulgarian juniors’ head coach deems Russia as favorite to win the 2014 CEV U20 Volleyball European Championship - Men
Bulgaria will be aiming high at the 2014 CEV U20 Volleyball European Championship - Men, which will be held in Brno, Czech Republic and Nitra, Slovakia from August 29 through September 6, regardless of the results of the drawing of lots that took place last week in Prague, says head coach Nikolay Jeliazkov.
Bulgaria ended up in Pool I to be played in Nitra, along with host Slovakia, France, Russia and two teams qualifying from the third round.
“For me, the pool composition does not really matter,” the legendary Bulgarian player and now mentor of the Lion Cubs Niki Jeliazkov points out. “If we want to achieve something meaningful at this championship, we have to be able to face and beat anybody. For sure, it will be difficult and it is very important that we prepare well for these finals.”
Still, the head coach of Bulgaria’s juniors admits: “Russia is certainly the favorite,” but then he adds: “However, we have witnessed surprising results many times. In my opinion, there are many high-quality teams that will participate in the European Championship and the battle will be fierce. I am expecting an interesting competition with many exciting matches.”
Bulgaria will find out the last two opponents in the pool by July 13, the last day of third-round qualifications. Jeliazkov and his selection of players will get together on July 19 to start preparing for the games in Nitra.
